In this blog assignment, we were asked to look at the Beloit College Mindset List. It lists 75 points that describe the incoming college class of 2014. We were asked to reflect on the points that were most accurate, and inaccurate.
I found that a lot of the points in this list were accurate, in my mind anyway. The first one that I found accurate was the one that said e-mail was too slow. I hardly ever use e-mail, except for the cymail that Iowa State uses for assignments and updates. Most people my age have adapted to Facebook, or something of that sort. In Facebook you see all the information you need on one page. With e-mail you have to go though multiple pages to see all the info.
Another point I found accurate was that we always blame the economy for our problems in life. Since as long as I can remember the economy hasn't been doing well. People are always complaining about how bad the economy is doing, and how much money they are losing.
One other point I found accurate was that people of this class have always had hundreds of channels, but nothing to watch. At home I had like 300 channels that I could watch, but I couldn't ever find anything good to watch. I would search through the cable guide like 6 or seven times and then give up. It was very frustrating.
One point that I thought was inaccurate was that people of my age don't know how to write in cursive. In my high school, all the written assignments that were handed in had to be written in cursive. I actually write in cursive most of the time because of this.
Overall I agreed with most of the points in this list. Some were more relevant than others. I thought a few were way off for me, but I thought they did a good job when composing this list.
I agree with what you said about email. It is not nearly updated enough compared to some of the things online. The only thing I use my email for his my cymail for school, like you said. Otherwise I just use facebook or something like that. I also agree with what you said about cursive. I clearly know how to write cursive and can when I need to.
ReplyDeleteWe do blame the economy for everything! For as long as I've been able to "understand" what economy is, it has been fairly poor. And, I've always been so used to hearing my parents or grandparents complain about how crappy it is. They blame it on high prices, no jobs, and having not enough money. I also think it would have worked if they said that "we blame our poor economy that the president started on everything." I remember when Bush was president it was his fault, and now people say it's Obama's fault! Sorry for posting a political comment :( lol
ReplyDeleteI agree with the nothing on TV thing. Despite HBO and the NFL Ticket, I still manage to find absolutely nothing on tv
ReplyDeleteDJ, I agree with you on e-mail. I only use my e-mail for assignments. I mainly use facebook or text when I need a question to be answered.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree emails are becoming too slow, since there are so many new technology out there.
ReplyDeleteThat is really odd that your school had to do everything in cursive. I never had that. Anyway, I grew up without those hundreds of TV channels, so I can't understand that point. And you make a good point about Facebook, everything IS right there and easy to get to. Sometimes emails can be frustrating. But, I don't think Facebook is very legit most of the time... seems like it is mostly just a time waster.
ReplyDeleteYa I definitely agree with the e-mail thing I only use it for school things and I basically use facebook for everything else.
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be happening a lot cuz I come from a small town, but I kinda disagree with you on the email and channels thing. I've never had more than 20-30 channels at home, and until coming to college, I kinda avoided facebook cuz it seemed like it would waste a lot of my time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most of what you wrote, especially that of the email. I actually didn’t know who to send an email until my senior year of high school because I thought that it wasn’t a very good means of communication until I got up here to Iowa State.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your first statement. I never use email except for Cy-mail for my professors. Heck I'm sure I have about 1000 or more emails right not that have not been read!
ReplyDeleteI've never had cable so I don't really know what it's like to surf through so many channels and not find anything to watch
